SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing, which means to gain website traffic in search engine results primarily through paid advertising (pay per click). Essentially, you choose what words/phrases to rank for. You can catch which websites are using SEM by the “Ad” or “Sponsored” labels that Google places above the search result for that site.
